DIY Smelly Odor Knockout Spray with Essential Oils (Easy Homemade Room Spray)

Confession Time: Sometimes I leave a pile of dishes to soak in the sink and they end up sitting there for 24 hours or more. Life happens (errr...or I just procrastinate doing the dishes). You can relate, right?

Having a million dishes is one of the by-products of being a food blogger. When I shoot photos of my recipes (like creamy chicken noodle soup or double chocolate peanut butter cookies for example), I use a bunch of bowls & measuring vessels and all types of props so my kitchen ends up looking like a wreck!

In those instances, when I finally get around to doing them, the sink has a weird funk. In the past I've had to fill the sink with copious amounts of distilled vinegar and hot water and let it soak several times to eliminate the smell 100%.

Back in September, I finally got fed up with the by-product of my own laziness. So, you know what I did? It certainly wasn't the dishes! Like a typical Type B I sought out a much quicker and more effective way to eliminate this lingering odor.

Eliminating Smelly Odors Naturally

Since I gave up commercial air fresheners years ago (they're filled with hundreds of toxic chemicals like formaldehyde that do nothing to eliminate the bad smell and only numb your senses), I decided to reach for my growing collection of essential oils.

The first two essential oils that I tried were Thieves and Lemon. They smelled amazing, but after sitting for 20 minutes the smell was still evident.

I eventually decided to try Purification, which is a blend of essential oils made by Young Living. I'd already used it many a time for an outdoors spray, so I figured it'd work just as well on odors. I also added some unscented witch hazel into the mix to help disperse the oils better in the water.

Bingo! We have a winner, folks.

Simple, Three-Ingredient Spray to Remove Odors

After spraying on this new odor-reducing mixture with three simple ingredients--Purification essential oil, witch hazel, and purified water--the smell was completely gone in about five minutes. It works quickly!

Needless to say, I've tried it many times since then (is that an admission of how lazy I am about cleaning?) and it worked the same every single time. Even better, I tried it out in the bathroom after someone had just used it and the spray neutralized the gross scent!

This is an all-purpose odor neutralizer that you can use all around your home to make stuff smell better AND eliminate funky, foul, and stale odors.

What the heck is Purification?

Purification is an essential oil blend made by Young Living that comes in their Premium Starter Kit. It contains Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Melaleuca Alternifolia (a.k.a. Tea Tree Oil), Lavandin, and Myrtle essential oils.

If you don't have access to this blend, you could give the individual oils a try or a mixture of a few of them. I'm not sure which has the strongest odor fighting power in the bunch. If you do try your own mixture and find success, make sure to leave a comment below!

Update (February 2016): For combating really smelly odors like stinky bathrooms, I now like to add in Peppermint essential oil, as well. For some reason, it really cuts through the stink and freshens things up quickly!

Learn how to make a simple, three-ingredient homemade room freshener spray for removing odors around your home. This all-purpose spray is non-toxic and harnesses the powers of essential oils to neutralize odors in all areas of your home, especially the kitchen and bathroom!

materials:

  • 5 drops of Purification essential oil blend (I buy all my oils here)
  • 1/2 an ounce of witch hazel (I used THIS)
  • 10 ounces of distilled water (reverse osmosis also works)
  • 5 drops of peppermint essential oil (optional - great for stinky bathrooms)

tools:

steps:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a 12-ounce or larger spray bottle.
  2. Shake well to disperse the essential oil in the liquid.
  3. Spray directly onto the stinky area. (I used at least an ounce of the spray all over my kitchen sink, let it sit for 5 min, then the smell was gone!)
  4. When you're done, store the spray in a cool, dark place and re-shake the bottle before each use.

NOTES:

I have only sprayed this directly (at a close range) on hard, non-porous surfaces in my bathroom & kitchen. However, I have sprayed it into the air in rooms with carpet & linoleum floors to freshen them. If you want to try this on specific areas of furniture or upholstery, test a small inconspicuous spot first.
